Hugh was born in Tennessee abt. 1829. The earliest I have found him is in 1850 in Jersey County, Illinois, where he was listed as Henderson Canady on the census. He and his brothers Washington and John are living with him in the Anderson Ivey household. Two farms down is his brother William.

In 1860 Hugh is living close to Martins Creek, North Twp., Lawrence County, Arkansas with wife Isabelle and their son Lott or Lark. Three of his siblings, William, John, and Mary Anderson also were living in the same area.

Hugh purchased Public Land from the General Land Office in Batesville, Arkansas, September 1, 1860 in Randolph County, Arkansas, towit: The West half of the South West quarter of Section thirty-four, in Township twenty-one North, of Range three West, in the District of Lands subject to sale at Batesville, Arkansas, containing eighty acres.

In 1870, Hugh was living in Howell Twp., Howell County, Missouri, he has a new wife named Ellen, and four new children, Sarah Pearl, George W., Elizabeth, and John Henry (Jack).

In 1880, Hugh is living in Elmwood Twp., Saline County, Missouri. He is still married to Ellen and they have one more child, Martha. His brother Henry is living in Blackwater Twp., of the same County, two years later, Henry purchased land in Elmwood Twp. apparently close to Hugh.

Continuing Research:

I have searched for Hugh in the 1900 census, but cannot find him. I suspect he died before 1900, but I have not found where he is buried. Of his six known children, only John (Jack) Henry, and Sarah Pearl (Pearly), have been found. These two married and lived in and around the children of their Uncle Henry in Lafayette and Ray Counties.

Pearly, married George Hursman, a cousin of her cousin Emma's husband James Hursman. She lived in the Dover, Missouri area until her death February 28, 1952, she is buried in MacHpelah Cemetery, Lexington, Lafayette County, Missouri.

Jack ran around with his cousins Thad and Albert. In his later life, Jack became unstable and killed his wife. He was sentenced to life in the Missouri State Penitentiary. Jack died in the Jefferson City Penitentiary in 1927 from TB. I have not found where he is buried.
